Gifts to the college’s Student Emergency Fund directly support students facing financial challenges. Since the Fund was created in 2018, it has dispersed more than $62,000 to students in need. In the last year alone, the Fund provided $20,600 to students.
Your contribution is reserved to help students cover a number of expenses, including but not limited to:
“Within a week of the request, I was granted $500 to purchase a new computer. I am extremely grateful for this gift as I am currently using that very same computer to write this letter of gratitude and appreciation. It gives me great comfort to know that the University is here to support me both emotionally and financially so that I can resume my studies. This service is essential at a time where the world seems to be filled with extra stress, hardships, and challenges.”
–Kathleen Mahoney, a doctoral student in Mathematics, Science, and Learning Technologies, who received support from the Student Emergency Fund this year.
Samuel Abora, doctoral candidate in Language, Literacy, and Culture: “I work as a Youth Development Professional…at a school for children with autism. I am aiming to be an education professor and researcher who will affect children’s lives and learning. I have had the opportunity to see the best of me since I became a member of this wonderful UMass community."
Rose Gefteas, Early Childhood Education major: “My service-learning experiences have inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. In the classroom, my persistent and passionate voice will allow me to have a meaningful impact on all of my future students. In addition to working in a traditional educational setting, I would love to join an organization like Teach for America, so I can mesh my love for both teaching and community outreach."
