Why support UMass Sociology during UMass Gives?

During UMass Gives, the Sociology Department is raising funds for our Summer Internship Scholarship Fund, which reduces the financial barriers for our students to get real world experience. Your donation will go directly to our undergraduate students who have faced the challenges of the past few years head on and are preparing to go out into the world with the skills and knowledge to have a positive impact on society.

The UMass Department of Sociology prepares students to examine social problems and utilize critical thinking and a global perspective to develop solutions and support. Our students pursue careers and research where they can use their perspective to make a difference – including in social policy, law, criminal justice, social science research, education, advocacy, and social work, to name a few.

While the demand for expertise in these areas continues to grow, many internship opportunities in these fields remain unpaid or low-paid. The Summer Internship Scholarship Fund provides financial support so that students can take on positions that will enhance their professional growth and make a difference in the world without having to worry about affording housing and other living expenses.

As a direct result of your donation, more of our sociology students will be able to take on internships related to their future career goals that they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to pursue. Your UMass Gives donation truly has a direct impact on the lives of our students.
