UMass Inclusive Learning (UIL)

UMass Inclusive Learning (UIL)

At UMass Inclusive Learning (UIL), we believe that everyone should have access to higher education.  Our mission is to improve access for learners with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Students with I/DD have traditionally been left out of higher education due to barriers in primary and secondary education environments. Our two programs, MAICEI and DRIVEE, work to create an accessible college experience for disabled students where they leave with the academic, employment, and social skills needed to succeed in today’s world.

UIL develops skills in self-confidence and community building. Students gain fulfilling friendships and become an advocate for both themselves and their peers. We are proud to be part of UMass Amherst’s goal to increase inclusivity on campus as a program that builds a better future for disabled students in higher education.

Massachusetts Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative (MAICEI)

MAICEI is UIL’s under 22 program. In partnership with regional high schools, UIL works to bring students on Individualized Education Plans to the UMass college campus. Students engage in academic opportunities, internships, and social experiences as part of their transition goals out of high school. Every semester, students take at least one college course, engage in an internship or paid position, and plan social activities with our team of undergraduate peer mentors.

Diverse Range of Inclusive & Versatile Educational Experiences (DRIVEE)

DRIVEE is the UMass Inclusive Learning program for students out of high school. Contrary to MAICEI, where UIL partners with school districts, DRIVEE is a private-pay and application-based program for individuals in the community. The programming and eligibility is like MAICEI.

Students in DRIVEE have access to the UMass course catalog and internships across campus. In DRIVEE, students are provided Education Coaches through UIL and can socialize with our peer mentor team if they wish!

DRIVEE means lifelong learning. It means always having an opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and socially. We at UIL provide this opportunity.

We are excited to expand our programming next year by hiring additional Education Coaches, recruiting more peer mentors, and admitting more students. While we receive some funding from the state of Massachusetts, many students still pay partly out of their own pocket to receive our services. This makes it near impossible for students from lower economic backgrounds to take part in our programs. Sponsors like you help to make our program possible for students who would otherwise not be able to attend. Your support means that these students can thrive and be a self-driver in their own lives.
