At UMass Amherst, our Sociology department researches and teaches about virtually every aspect of human society: the family, gender, race and ethnic relations, aging, education, work, demographics, and more. One of the hallmarks of the UMass Sociology Department is our commitment to “public sociology”; addressing the general public about issues of class, race, gender, and sexual orientation among others. Our faculty influence public debate and are participants in activism and community engagement.
Sociology is among the most highly ranked programs on campus. In the most recent U.S. News & World Report, UMass Sociology’s graduate program was ranked 30th, 13th overall in the sub-field of population, and 6th overall in the sub-field of sex and gender.
Support Our Current Students
Our department is passionate about making our society a better place, and your gift will go towards providing support for our students. Through donations like yours, undergraduate Abbey Nicholson ‘20 was able to gain vital career experience as an intern with the Office of MA Governor Charlie Baker during Summer 2018.
Help us Recruit More Innovative Social Scientists
Your participation in UMassGives will help our department attract researchers making vital contributions to our society. Like doctoral candidate Yolanda Wiggins, whose research focuses on how Black college students encounter a balancing act of academic responsibilities and family obligations.
Support Groundbreaking Research
Our faculty are part of a number of unique projects, and you can contribute towards making these findings happen with #UMassGives! Faculty like Anna Branch, Laurel Smith-Doerr, and Joya Misra, who are co-directing the UMass ADVANCE project.
