Department of Journalism

The UMass Amherst Journalism Department is proud to participate in #UMassGives 2019. As a department, we stand by our ‘students-first’ philosophy. Therefore, any gifts that you contribute will go toward funding growing classroom and experiential learning opportunities for our students.

Why support UMass Journalism during this two-day campaign?

Journalism is growing.

Our department, as well as the journalism industry, is growing and has expanded opportunities for current and future students. For example, this year we are adding new courses to our offerings as well as building a new public relations curriculum

Our exciting new classes focus on topics like business reporting, narrative video, podcasting, public relations and more.

Jennie Donohue, lecturer, and director of the public relations curriculum joined us this past fall to develop a public relations concentration that rivals other top programs. This curriculum will draw students looking to not only learn and develop the basics of ethics and writing journalistically but professionally, too.

While we are excited about expanding our department to better equip our students with the tools they need to succeed, we also continue to grow experiential learning opportunities within the department. The Amherst Wire, created and developed by multiple groups of students over the last decade, continues to operate as a way for students to publish their multimedia and written work online for the masses to see.

As a new online publication this past year, The Rebirth Project aims “to give students of color a platform to put their personal work out, and to provide a safe space for active and engaged discussion within the PoC community on campus.” It is crucial that all students feel invited and safe to express their writing, creativity, and opinions, which is why The Rebirth Project is an integral addition to our department.

By giving, you will also be supporting the department’s 10+ scholarships offered yearly for tuition aid, internship funds and study abroad assistance.

Supporting us during #UMassGives supports the students working hard to advance their careers as well-rounded and skilled journalists.

Thank you!

I hope my fellow UMass, Amherst alumni will join me in giving back to our alma mater and current and future students.”
