Department of Economics

UMass Economics has cultivated a worldwide reputation as the premier center for research and teaching in heterodox economics. Within this proud tradition, our students learn to think critically and challenge the status quo - they’re not only learning in the classroom but outside of it and we need your support to make this happen. Your gift will go towards funding our greatest needs, such as:

Student-Oriented Programs

Undergrads immerse themselves in programs outside the classroom such as:

  • Economics Undergraduate Research Assistantship (EURA):  Current students engage in cutting edge research with faculty mentors to gain valuable research assistant experience on research projects.
  • The Undergraduate Economics Club (UEC) connects students with alumni doing significant work in their fields, and organizes field trips to expose students to future career paths.
  • Massachusetts Undergraduate Journal of Economics (MUJE) - MUJE is entirely student-run and provides a forum for undergraduate students to publish high-quality research and essays in economics.

Policy-Influencing Research

We nurture research that tackles often overlooked topics such as carbon pricing as an instrument in climate policy and the economic pitfalls of sexual orientation discrimination. Help us build capacity to meet new economic challenges in an era of transitions, and continue to influence policy makers to make better policies.

Ensuring Career Readiness

Students learn career readiness skills through an innovative course called ‘Job Skills for Econ Majors (ECON 491I), that includes skills in resume writing and interviewing; developing the ‘elevator pitch’ and dressing for interviews; using various tools to research and examine case studies of potential employers; and networking.  Most sessions feature accomplished UMass Economics alumni as guest speakers who offer sage advice to our students about entering the job market.
