Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) Amherst is a registered student organization at UMass Amherst and a local chapter of its national namesake. Students for a Free Tibet works in solidarity with Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence. We are a network of young people and activists around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and nonviolent direct action, we campaign for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom from Chinese colonization. Our role is to empower and train youth as leaders in the worldwide movement for social justice.
UMass SFT also shares these same goals while promoting the cultural aspect of Tibet and sharing all it has to offer with the Pioneer Valley Community. That is why we will need your help to fund our annual New Year's Celebration (Losar) celebration held every February!
UMass SFT Losar is a celebration of Tibetan culture and encapsulates what makes us Tibetan! Traditional Tibetan dance and song performances are enacted by Tibetans from the Pioneer Valley Community and Boston! In addition, presentations about the intricacies and specifics of Losar in tandem with presentations about the political situation occurring Tibet are given. Multiple booths will be set around the venue including ones that teach Tibetan calligraphy, have audience members don traditional Tibetan attire (Chupas) and allow participants to appreciate Tibetan artwork from local Tibetan artists in Boston. And most importantly, home-made, traditional and delicious Tibetan food will be served!
Your donations will go towards food and catering costs, contracts for performers, rental and set up costs and miscellaneous costs such as flyers and decorative materials.
Please see our video of a dance recital performed by yours truly and photos from previous Losar events!
We thank everyone who helps bolster our dreams of making next year's Losar the best it can possibly be!
