The East Asian Languages and Cultures program is a vibrant community of teachers, scholars, undergraduates, and graduate students. As the only program in the University that focuses solely on East Asia, we are in a unique position to provide insight into a part of the world that is not ordinarily studied as broadly in other departments and programs.
Since it started half a century ago, the program has served nearly a thousand students, who subsequently launched their careers as translators, diplomats, international businesspeople, and academics. And we will continue supporting anyone who wants to take on the challenge of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean and open the door to a whole different world.
To celebrate the milestone of our fiftieth anniversary and chart our course for the next half-century, we are planning a big reunion for Spring 2020, when we hope to establish a fund to sponsor various student support programs, such as internship aid and translation contests. We will also host several Asian cultural events, including a film screening, musical performances, art exhibits, and a calligraphy workshop so that people in the greater community can also join us in celebrating our fifty years of promoting East Asian cultures in Amherst.
To sponsor all these Spring 2020 events, we are hoping to raise $10,000 through #UMassGives. Please help us reach our goal and come to UMass next year to enjoy the fun!
