The mission of the UMass Belly Dance Club (UBDC) is to teach and perform the beautiful art of belly dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. UBDC brings in practicing belly dance professionals to educate club members on the techniques, culture, history, and current events of the art form. Club showcases are hosted every semester free of charge to all who want to attend. A goal of UBDC is to inspire and empower students to celebrate and love their bodies regardless of size, age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or ability; thus raising self-esteem and promoting a community of acceptance.
We are raising money through UMass Gives with the mission of generating funds to pay for belly dance lessons provided by visiting professionals, one of whom is Elizabeth Estrella. The quality of our instruction will depend on the resources available to pay for these lessons, however, the club is not willing to charge its members or the public for cultural enrichment. Therefore, a large source of our revenue comes from donations. We will also use these funds to purchase services from sound and lighting companies to improve the quality of our showcases. We are incredibly grateful for any and all donations!
Shimmies!
