We are starting an exciting new center at UMass—The Matthews Center for Philosophy and Children—and we could really use your support! The main goal of the Matthews Center is to encourage elementary, middle, and high school students throughout the region to ponder life’s big questions. A second goal is to promote a college-going mindset among children in underfunded school districts. The Center will (i) send Five College students and faculty into schools in Springfield and Holyoke (among other places) to do philosophy with kids in those schools; (ii) host residential summer programs at UMass for high school students; (iii) run workshops to train K–12 teachers to do philosophy with their students in the classroom; (iv) serve as a hub for premier research in the field of Philosophy with Children; and (v) create and freely share curricula for doing philosophy in K–12 classrooms and for philosophy summer programs. The two images are posters that were created to advertise Question Everything, our summer program for high school students in Springfield and Holyoke.
