The Shotokan Karate club is an on-campus RSO that strives to help both UMass students and members of the surrounding community feel safer, stronger, and more confident. We go beyond just self-defense and help club members strengthen both their body and their mind through Kihon (basic techniques), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring). Our philosophy teaches students how to defend themselves and others while also teaching discipline, specifically to not act aggressively. Our club follows the Dojo Kun which reads as follows:
Seek Perfection of Character
Be Faithful
Endeavor
Respect Others
Refrain from Violent Behavior
These core principles represent who we are and who strive to be both as a club and as individuals. We are raising money to allow everyone to participate in the club to the fullest extent with the traditions of Shotokan Karate. With the donations, we receive we are hoping to be able to purchase extra gis and belts for the club as well as other equipment that will make training more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
