The UMass Women's Rugby Club (UMass WRFC) is a Registered Student Organization and club sport on campus. Our team is part of the Northeast D1 Division where we play matches against other Women’s teams at the collegiate level located in the New England area. As a team, we travel throughout the New England area every weekend to play against other Women’s teams. We play rugby year-round, completing in 15’s matches throughout the fall, and playing a mix of 7’s and 15’s in the spring. Most players join our team with no prior rugby experience.
The money raised during UMass Gives will go toward a new scrum sled for our team to practice on. A scrum is a fight for the ball and it is used as a way to restart play after a stop of play. Practicing for scrums is very important because they can be dangerous, and having a new scrum sled would not only help to keep our forwards safe but also to improve our team’s abilities. A new scrum sled will help us perfect our scrum technique to come out ahead of our competition. Our current sled is almost a decade old and is no longer in the best condition for our players to use safely. As a team with many new players, it is crucial that we have a scrum sled to teach our players the proper way to engage in a scrum while ensuring their safety.
