50 years ago, a pioneering group of professors and students came together to create the University Without Walls (UWW), opening UMass up to non-traditional students for the first time. It was nothing short of revolutionary.
During #UMassGives, we will celebrate this remarkable milestone together by raising $15,000 to fund a new scholarship in honor of an alumna who radiated the spirit and legacy of UWW – Ruth B. Loving.
Beloved and renowned as the Mother of Civil Rights in Springfield, Mass., Ruth B. Loving dedicated her life to social justice and community activism and was a powerful force to be reckoned with until her death at age 100. In 1988, at the age of 73, she earned her B.A. from UMass Amherst through the University Without Walls, proving that it’s never too late to finish your college degree.
The Ruth B. Loving Scholarship honors and carries forward the legacy of this accomplished and influential alumna by providing support for socioeconomically disadvantaged students enrolled in the UWW, with preference given to those living in Hampden County, Mass.
To make this vital scholarship a reality, we need your help. So, give what you can and know that a gift of any amount- no matter how big or how small- will make a difference.
And if you give during UWW’s Power Hour on Thursday, April 29 from NOON to 1 p.m., your gift will have the greatest impact.
Enter to Win Our 50th Anniversary Prize!
In honor of UWW’s 50th Anniversary, if you give a gift of at least $50 during UMassGives you will be automatically entered to win a UMass gift package containing a UMass Amherst sweatshirt, and UWW t-shirt, mug, and hat.
$15k Unlocking Challenge
When we hit $12,500 raised, generous donors will unlock a $2,500 gift to push us to our goal.
We cannot thank you enough for your support. Your gift will make a real difference in the lives of adult students.
To another 50 years and beyond!
