Engineers Without Borders’s goal is to help build a better world through sustainable engineering projects that empower communities. Our club collaborates with community members in Ghana and Kenya to develop solutions for public health needs. Travel is a major part of EWB’s success, however, this year due to the pandemic, remote implementation projects have been just as productive.
The Ghana travel team completed their most recent trip to Saviefe-Deme in August 2019. They analyzed drone data that was collected on the trip to design a water distribution system to implement the next time they travel. Awaiting travel, the Ghana Project is continuing to develop their water distribution system which they had planned to implement in 2020 and are leading a remote mask-making project to bring cash flow to the community.
The Kenya travel team completed a successful trip to Nguluni in January 2020 right before travel was banned by EWB USA. The team implemented additional handwashing stations, connected existing water storage tanks to increase water availability, and collected water quality data from various systems in the community to begin focusing on the community’s health. Awaiting travel, the Kenya Project is working on remotely extending the pipeline that runs through Nguluni. Project members plan the project with reports and technical drawings and send them to community members for construction.
UMass Gives is a chance for EWB to fundraise for our projects directly, we are appreciative of all donations!
