Institute of Diversity Sciences

The Institute of Diversity Sciences (IDS) is a multidisciplinary unit that brings together faculty and students from UMass and the Five Colleges with the mission of connecting STEM to social justice through research and education.

On the research front, we promote science, engineering, and technology research on topics that advance equity and social justice. On the education front, we host student-facing programs to promote the success of diverse students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Gifts donated through UMassGives will be used to fund two IDS programs:

1. The Leadership Academy, an online professional development program for undergraduate students in computer science and engineering. The 3-week summer program aims to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in these fields by:

  • Creating an inclusive community for students from groups historically underrepresented in these disciplines
  • Teaching essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, and networking, as well as introducing students to professional norms and expectations in workplace settings—a vital aspect often overlooked in traditional college education, known as the "hidden curriculum
  • Providing students with opportunities to expand their professional network through interactions with visiting speakers from diverse tech and engineering industries, offering insights into various career paths
  • Facilitating connections with long-term mentors from these industries, enabling students to receive professional guidance and advice throughout the academic year

2. Students involved in research projects funded by IDS Seed Grants supporting teams of faculty and students working together across disciplines on STEM research topics that have an equity focus. Students gain valuable hands-on research experience while contributing to projects aimed at creating meaningful social change.

All gifts to the Institute of Diversity Sciences are deeply appreciated. Thank you for your generous support of our mission to promote equity through research-driven solutions to societal challenges!
