The 2018 election season is fast approaching! Any donations to the UMass Democrats will help our efforts to get Democrats elected, and for us to continue getting students engaged in politics.
The goal of the UMass Democrats is to educate students about the philosophy of the Democratic Party through various avenues, and engage students in activism within the political process. Throughout the last year, we have assisted in the election of local, state, and national Democratic candidates and have affected political change on all levels. We have mobilized hundreds of students to engage with their representatives, their political party, and given them platforms to talk to officials about issues they care about and are invested in. For example, over 300 people attended our event with the Attorney General of Massachusetts, Maura Healey in November. This event enabled students to understand the services the Attorney General's office offered, particularly for students. She answered various questions from all types of students on issues that pertain to them. Although 300 students attended, many people told us they felt that it was an intimate event with the Attorney General. Overall, the UMass Democrats have proven that we are committed to engaging students through events like these with their local, state, and federal officials which betters the communities in which we live.
The UMass Democrats have shown that by carrying out important and engaging events, an RSO can retain a captive, committed, and large membership. Over this past year the UMass Democrats have hosted elected officials such as Attorney General Maura Healey, canvassed for local political causes, phonebanked for democratic candidates across the country, held voter registration drives, and collaborated with college democrats at Amherst College, Smith College, and Mount Holyoke College. We have also been active in fostering bipartisanship by holding a joint meeting with the UMass College Republicans, and debating them in an event that was attended by over 100 people.
