Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering

Our group at UMass Amherst works at the intersection of rarefied gas dynamics, computational engineering, and artificial intelligence. We study gas flows in regimes where conventional fluid models are no longer sufficient, with applications ranging from hypersonic vehicles and microscale systems to advanced propulsion and thermal-flow devices. Our research combines physics-based simulation with modern computational methods, including machine learning and intelligent numerical modeling, to better understand and predict complex engineering phenomena.

At the same time, we are committed to expanding how AI is taught and used in mechanical engineering education. Our goal is to help students learn how modern data-driven tools can work alongside first-principles engineering, not replace it. Through research activities, classroom engagement, and student-centered projects, we aim to prepare the next generation of engineers to use AI responsibly and effectively in simulation, modeling, and design. The teaching and group-class photos on your site support this educational mission.

Through UMassGives, we are raising support for student research and educational development in this area. Donations will help us strengthen opportunities for students to participate in research in rarefied gas dynamics, expand access to computational and AI-based learning experiences in mechanical engineering, and build a stronger bridge between advanced engineering science and innovative education. Your support will directly help us grow a research and learning environment where students can contribute to meaningful engineering challenges while gaining skills that matter for the future.
