Shotokan Karate Club
The purpose of the UMass Shotokan Karate Club is to promote the sound mental, physical, and emotional development of its members through the study of traditional Shotokan karate. We are members of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) and the East Coast Collegiate Karate Union (ECCKU), with instruction led by Sensei Jared Carver, 5th dan. Membership is open to all UMass students, faculty, and staff. The club was established in 1976.
This year, we traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the ISKF National Competition. In the collegiate division, we won nine medals, including two gold medals! This is all thanks to our instructors, Jared Carver and Russell Wilson. Their dedication to the club inspires us to improve not only in our training, but in our personal lives as well.
