Comparative Literature Program

Comparative Literature is the international, interdisciplinary study of literature and other media as modes of human expression. Incorporating languages, film, translation, and literary studies, Comp Lit prepares students to actively engage the world as curious, multilingual global citizens.

Your contribution supports vibrant co-curricular programming for students and the community, including mOthertongue – a multilingual journal of literature and the arts, written and edited by our students, and Writing the World – an anthology of outstanding undergraduate writing. Recent intellectual and artistic events include a reading by acclaimed author Sandra Cisneros; an evening of Lebanese food, music, and the award-winning novelist Iman Humaydan; a workshop on reading, AI, and illegibility; and a number of talks on topics ranging from the poetics of Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk to the timeless appeal of medieval romance. 

Travel and exchange are integral to a Comp Lit education. Our students host Crossroads, an ambitious scholarly conference open to the public, and present their work at the Junior Year Writing conference. All students may apply for grants to further their studies – we seek to fund as many research and conference proposals as our students can dream up and our budget can allow.
