It has been an exciting year for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMass Amherst.  In September we launched a new undergraduate major in Statistics and Data Science.  We also welcomed two new faculty: Daoji Huang (combinatorics and algebraic geometry, joining us from the Institute for Advanced Study) and Matt Li (machine learning and inverse problems, joining us from MIT).  In December, our team for the Putnam mathematics competition (far and away the most prestigious competition in undergraduate mathematics) finished 14th nationally, and tied for second among public universities. 

Our students have benefited greatly in recent years from our active student clubs: chapters of the Association for Women in Mathematics and Gamma Iota Sigma (actuarial club); the Recreational Math Club; and now our new American Statistical Association chapter and STEM Teaching Club.  Many of these clubs are supported by generous donations as well as the department.  In addition, the department has added an Undergraduate Travel Grant program (to support students attending conferences and competitions related to our majors) to go with our longstanding support of graduate student travel.  Finally, donations provide the bulk of the support for our summer REU program, in which about 20 undergraduates have the opportunity to work on cutting edge research with our faculty.
