The UMass Microbiology undergraduate program is a thriving community of talented students passionate about science and discovery. Our majors excel in the classroom, lead groundbreaking research, engage in scientific outreach, and support their peers. With your help, we continue to provide resources and opportunities they need to succeed.


UMass Microbiology students and alumni are making waves. Here are just a few of many recent accomplishments. We are so proud of ALL of our students and graduates and ALL the ways they contribute to their communities and ours! 


Maelis Rousselot ’28 was named 2025’s  Dr. Tracie Moniece Gibson Scholar by the William Lee Science Impact Program in CNS.  This is a prestigious honor among those selected as Lee-SIP fellows. Maelis was recognized for her work in Dr. Jim Holden’s lab.  


Vincent Frye ’27 is part of a group of student scientists working on a scalable protein nanowire device (Frye works in Dr. Toshi Ueki’s lab). The group recently won the regional Hult Prize Challenge and will be moving on to the national competition. 


Ilana Krebs ’25 was recognized as a 21rst Century Leader at the 2025 Commencement.  She was awarded for her outstanding leadership and service among many organizations.  


Victoria Selser ’21 (alum) received the Massachusetts Public Health Alliance’s Public Health Leadership Award for her outstanding work as Epidemiologist for the City of Fitchburg’s Health Department.  


Margaret Dreishpoon ’20 (alum) was selected as an 2025-2026 Mahoney Alumni Award recipient. This award recognizes graduates of the iCONS program who have successfully applied interdisciplinary skills (biotech industry).


We are proud of our undergraduates and recent grads who presented their course-based or lab-based research at 2026’s Pioneer Valley Microbiology Symposium and/or will be presenting at the Massachusetts Undergraduate Research Conference.
