The UMASS Dance Program uses this scholarship to increase the diversity of our student body. It is given to UMASS Dance Majors who show exceptional skill and promise in the field of dance studies.
This scholarship was created in Memory of Richard Jones. He was appointed to the staff of the University of Massachusetts on September 1, 1973, and remained with the department until his death in 1991. While at the University, Jones was the founding artistic director of the Amdans Theater and was the artistic director of the University Dancers from 1979 to 1991.
He brought international performing and teaching experience to the dance program for 18 years.
The UMass Dance Program is at the forefront of educating the contemporary dance major through physical, creative, and theoretical scholarship. The program supports this by creating an environment that embraces inquiry, rigor, and risk; providing a robust and relevant curriculum; engaging the wider, diverse regional community, and supporting a faculty that brings to the classroom/studio the benefits of national and international creative and scholarly research.
