The Gloucester Marine Station (GMS) creates hands-on learning opportunities focused on driving discovery. We work on the coast, in the water, and with people, exploring local questions to inform global solutions, and building a solid foundation for collaborative action. We use our waterfront location, exceptional interdisciplinary faculty, and students to collaborate with coastal communities, other research institutions, businesses, and nonprofits to advance research and demonstration of resilient coastal and ocean innovation, technology and practical applications.
To achieve our vision and supporting goals over the next five years, and to fully leverage the recent $3 million state and university investment for Summer 2025 maintenance to waterfront infrastructure (dock and crane for ocean access, an outdoor teaching and meeting space, seawall repairs, and addition of Living Seawall panels for interdisciplinary research and demonstration), UMass Amherst GMS must address its immediate challenges:
1) Increase faculty and staff capacity to support programs, create opportunity for student research, and support facility operations;
2) Address the challenges of being 2.5 hours from the main campus in Amherst and all of the associated resources and services associated with a campus community (i.e., housing, classroom, lab and office space).
As we work toward these 5 year goals, your gift right now will support 2025 student scholarships and research equipment. Learn more about us here: https://www.umass.edu/gloucester-marine-station.
