Department of Anthropology

Help support the Department of Anthropology and its vital work in these uncertain times during UMassGives 2025!  Through our rigorous teaching and research, we continue to prepare our students to tackle today's most pressing issues, from human evolution to cultural diversity to health disparities—and your support is a huge part of our success.

This year, our focus is on participation. Whether it’s $5 or $50, every gift brings us closer to our goal of (##) gifts and helps us unlock exciting matching opportunities!  We have two funds on which we are focusing this year:

  • The Sylvia Forman Third World Scholarship Fund.  The department is committed to support our students from communities that have traditionally been the subjects of anthropological inquiry. The late Sylvia Forman, former chair of our department, established this fund shortly before her passing with the aim of directing anthropology away from its Western and colonial roots and into a discipline with a truly global understanding of the human condition.
  • The Anthropology Department Fund.  From providing students with research opportunities to updating the equipment and technology available to our students, the department’s general fund provides support where the need is greatest.

We know these are challenging times for many, and that’s why every contribution—no matter the size—means so much. Your participation isn’t just a donation; it’s a vote of confidence in the work we do and the students we support. Help us reach our goal of ($CHALLENGE$) and (##) of donors! Let’s show the strength of our community and make a big impact together.
